Konnoak Updates and Announcements for May 24th
Today is day 167(Day 7 of Specials )
Our EOG Results were not as good as I hoped.
As you can see, we have MAJOR work in reading. Our overall proficiency for reading was 34.5%.
3rd was 31.3%
4th was 32.6%
5th was 39.8%
For math our overall proficiency for math was:
3rd was 64.3%
4th was 71.6%
5th was 64.9%
What concerns me is the overall proficiency which is 49.5%, which puts us as a low-performing school. It is very important that we have a detailed remediation plan. Ms. Autry, Ms. Johnson, and I will be working on a remediation plan with the grade levels today. We will need to remediate 188 students in reading, 101 in math and 68 in science. Many of you will be asked to participate in our remediation. AYP and ABC results will not be known until late June.
Announcements of the Week: Ms. McManus

- Today begins the process that the entire year has pointed to. You have all worked hard and supported our students. Now they have to stand on their own feet and show what they know. Please do a sweep of your rooms. Remove all essential questions; problems you've worked out on the board; items on bulletin boards that have anything to do with reading, math, or science (fifth only). If you are in doubt, take it down.
- Please remember the following:
- Staff members, whether administrators or proctors, should turn off all cell phones and they should remain off until the test is complete and the materials have been turned in to Mrs. Autry.
- All materials on walls must be covered and/or taken down
- Both the administrator and proctor must be circulating throughout the entire room continuously during the test
- Administrators and proctors cannot bring food, drinks, books or magazines to eat/read during the administration of the test
- Students with accommodations must be monitored to determine if they are, in fact, using the accommodations. The results of their monitoring must be entered on the Accommodation Monitoring forms for each students
- NCDPI and the WS/FCS Testing and Accountability Department will be conducting audits in the schools to ensure that testing is being done according to the manual. Therefore, do not deviate from the manual.
- Make sure that when you write the time you begin testing; the duration of the test; and the times for breaks and/or the end of the test are clearly visible to the students and from the door to your classroom. We check these times throughout the test and need to be able to see them clearly from the door. Please check your time calculations.
- When in doubt ASK. We want to avoid testing irregularities and misadministrations. Therefore, ASK before you act.
- As of yesterday morning, Konnoak had only 5 parents respond to the WS/FCS Parent Survey on-line. The highest elementary school had only 12. Many schools were not listed since they had no responses. Most schools had 1-3. Ms. McCoy is working on getting more participants.

The days will properly upload as full days even though your "official school day" in SubFinder may be less (ex. 7.5 hours). We are pleased that we were able to work around this problem without modifying your SubFinder data in any way. (You may still have to correct days in this month that uploaded earlier than today. Please page through your SPEED records one more time to catch any problems from earlier dates.)
Now that the program has been corrected, your teachers and teacher assistants should be told that they now should use SubFinder for ALL ABSENCES REQUESTED, including those that are for partial days. Please make this announcement as soon as possible to your school staffs. - No specials on Friday

- Vision Statement: Students will learn and succeed in a safe, engaging, and caring climate of high expectations and supportive relationships
- Dr. Martin reviewed some curricular changes that will be taking place for next year. I'll be going over those with SIT on Wednesday at our SIT meeting.
- We received more budget information regarding the proposed budget that went to the county commissioners on Thursday. According to Dr. Martin, the commissioners and School Board are not on the same page budget and further negotions are needed to bring them together. Whether that will mean more cuts or a revision of the cuts identified, we will have to wait and see. The board will not adopt its final budget until mid June. At that point all budget reductions will be finalized.

- Transfer Fair at Parkland High School at 4:30
- The reason that this is happening is that your employees are indicating (in SubFinder) that they will be absent from "7:00am to 2:30pm" or some other period which is not fully 8 hours long. You will note that the period "7:00am to 2:30pm," for example, is only 7.5 hours long, which equates to only 94% of a day. In order for the system to account properly for these absences, your employees will need to enter their absence as "7:00am to 3:00pm" or some other period which is fully 8 hours long. Teacher assistant and secretarial positions are defined by the Board of Education as 8hr/day positions, and they are required to account for their daily time in 8 hour increments. This is true even if they happen to work fewer than 8 hours on any given day. You must key in a full 8-hour period for each day's absence in SubFinder from now on.

To clarify, we will no longer be sending progress reports via email. Parents who have been receiving emails should be directed to use Parent Assistant. We are not eliminating printed reports for parents who do not have access to a computer...this only affects parents who have been getting emails. The following message was sent through AlertNow Friday informing parents of this as well.
This is a message from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools for parents who have been receiving Progress Reports through email. All student progress reports are now available through Parent Assistant, an online resource that allows parents to access student progress, discipline, and attendance any time, any day. Although the information is available 24 x 7, please allow teachers one week to input grades.
If you do not already have an account, please go to your child’s school (you should go to the school of your oldest child if you have more than one.)
We hope that many of you are already utilizing this resource as we strive to seek the most effective means for communication between home and school.

- Last day to complete open enrollment form: As you know, we were advised by the State Health Plan last year that individuals who smoke or otherwise use tobacco products and are not actively pursuing tobacco cessation programs will be automatically moved to the 70/30 health plan coverage level with the July 01, 2010 plan year. In the following year, a similar change will be made for those individuals whose Body Mass Indexes are outside the acceptable range for their height/age. During the open enrollment period this year, individuals will be required to attest to their use/abstinence from tobacco products. Those who attest that they are not users of tobacco products will be permitted to enroll at the 80/20 health plan coverage level. Those who cannot attest to that, or whose covered family members use tobacco products, will only be eligible to accept the 70/30 plan. For that reason, it is critical that all employees who currently have coverage under the State Health Plan participate in open enrollment, to ensure they are enrolled in the plan that best meets their needs/eligibility.
- All open enrollment is on-line this year. Paper copies of enrollment forms are not be available. Employees can access the enrollment programs via the internet from their home computers, or at work.
Failure to complete open enrollment processes will result in your coverage defaulting to the 70/30 plan. Changes to this enrollment status cannot be made after Friday April 09, 2010 for the July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011 plan year.
Please complete the Race/Ethnicity questionaire that can be found under the News and Events heading on the WSFCS Home Page - There is No Classified Intent Form This Year because classified employees can promote during the school year. Also with HR and Assistant Superintendent approval you can transfer.

- SALSA Lessons: As we are approaching the end of the year and temperature raises up, not only because spring weather, I was wondering if any teacher, assisstant or student's parents would be interested in FREE SALSA lessons, as part of my personal's cultural program. It would be just one hour per week, I would be your teacher, and we will have great fun... Thus, I am sending this flyer to all school staff as a survey so I can make an idea about the staff that would be attending. Please let me know if there is a better day and time.I am inviting the ESL parents to this activity FIRST so I can see the response. This cultural program tries to target the ESL population involvement with the school. So all parents attending the free lessons will need to "pay" something in exchange. That will be parent "homework". The idea is that they would eventually improve their English by practicing through these activities as well as understand the importance of bilingualism in their children, which I see as a gift that they must keep and share with their children.
- In light of the recent sucide of a girl due to bullying in Massachusetts, make sure you report all bullying incidences to the administration.
